| metadata.dc.description.abstracten: | Sarcopenia is characterized by the progressive loss of muscle mass, strength, and physical performance, mainly associated with aging, but also influenced by behavioral and metabolic factors. Early identification of functional markers related to sarcopenia is fundamental for prevention strategies. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the association between sarcopenia and low flexibility in individuals aged 50 years or older, considering functional, behavioral, and sociodemographic aspects. This is a quantitative, cross-sectional study involving participants of both sexes, recruited in the municipality of Mariana – MG. Sarcopenia was assessed using the self-report questionnaire; Strength, Assistance with walking, Rise from a chair, Climb stairs, Falls (SARC-F), gait speed test (4 meters), handgrip strength with dynamometer, sit-to-stand test, Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, sit-and-reach test, and behind-the-back reach test. For the description of the study population, sociodemographic information (age, sex, marital status, skin color, income, and education) and lifestyle habits (physical activity and body mass index - BMI) were collected. Fifty-one individuals participated in the study, mostly women (80.4%), aged between 60–69 years (62.7%). The majority were physically active (96.1%), and 31.4% were overweight. A low risk of sarcopenia (96.1%), preserved handgrip strength (84.3%), adequate mobility in the TUG (82.4%), and normal gait speed (98%) were observed. In contrast, there was a high prevalence of very weak lower limb strength (78.5%) and low flexibility (88.2%). No association was identified between handgrip strength and flexibility (OR=0.92; 95% CI: 0.09–9.10; p=0.94). |
