Resumo em outra língua: It investigates the possibility of the existence of connotative and denotative semiotic systems (Martin 1992) in the meaning production of resident killer whales (Ford, Ellis, Balcomb 2000). From the data collected, it was sought to model one genre of resident killer whales, as well as describe how the different configurations of the register variables behave, as well as the linguistic systems generated. From these data, it was sought to draw the systems that killer whales evolved throughout their semiotic history, to provide subsidies for Translation Studies (Teruya, Matthiessen 2015), introducing the concepts of cryptosemiosis and interspecific translation. It was intended to highlight the relevance of the phenomenon of functional variation (Matthiessen 2019) for translation (Kim et al. 2021) between different denotative systems and, consequently, connotative ones (House 2015). Resident killer whales were chosen as the object of study because of the literature that points out that complex social systems, as well as sophisticated cognitive skills, are strong indicators of the emergence of culture in animal species, such as humans (Sewall 2015). Orcinus orca is a highly social, gregarious species with large brains in both absolute and relative sizes (Marino et al. 2004). Furthermore, the main motivator of the research was the linguistic literature itself that discusses the communicative abilities of animals other than humans (Halliday 2001), whose conclusions, in general, reached the consensus that both children in the process of linguistic development in early childhood, as well as animals with large brains and warm blood, have nothing more than a “protolanguage”: a monofunctional and bistratal semiotic system, with only the content and expression strata available. In turn, the adult human system would be the only one in nature that has evolved other strata, including the context. However, a careful reading of the works on killer whales and other marine mammals seems to dispute such a claim, as the system that killer whales have evolved may resemble the human language systems more than is currently believed (Rendell, Whitehead 2001). For this investigation, this paper started from the bibliographic research method (Alyrio 2009) to have access to the use in context of the semiotic system that evolved in the species of killer whales and reinterprets the findings from a systemicfunctional perspective, to use the data to model contextual and linguistic systems (Halliday, Martin 2014). The selection of texts comes mainly from research carried out since the 1980s on killer whales residing in the North Pacific (Bigg 1987). For this reinterpretation, this paper made use of the systemic argumentation method (trinocular view, axial argumentation, and analysis in context) (Figueredo 2011), being, therefore, SFL the tool that guided the entire work. Furthermore, the application of the semiotic dimensions that interrelate in the description of human languages (stratification and metafunction, for example) as principles of linguistic organization provided a clearer view of the semiotic organization of the system of the resident killer whales. It was possible to present the architecture of their system and, thus, provide subsidies for Translation Studies, as well as contribute to the concept of protolanguage thanks to the proposed stratification. The results point to the existence of 9 system networks in four strata: genre, register, discourse semantics, and grammar. Therefore, the results positively point to the existence of stratification at the content plane and the existence of the context plane, contributing to the deepening of researches that focuses on the meaning potential of other animal species.
